Book Release for ¡A Bailar

Fall 2011 Update: It's official! ¡A Bailar! has been released and is available for sale to the public! You can order your own copy here. A book launch party will be taking place November 26th in Lakewood, NJ. For more information please visit the ¡A Bailar! tab above.

Paintings Finished for ¡A Bailar!

Winter 2011 Update: The release date for Christina's first picture book ¡A Bailar! is scheduled for October 31st of this year! This bilingual story is written by Judith Ortiz Cofer and will be published by Arte Público Press's children's division, Piñata Books. .You can also now view Christina's pet portrait pricing on her blog for any one interested in a personalized painting of their pet.

Spider Magazine

Summer 2010 Update: Some of Christina's work has recently been featured in two issues of Spider Magazine's 2010 (May/June and July/August) summer issues. She illustrated 5 paintings each in 2 stories written by Kristen O'Donnell Tubb that told the tale of crime solving, insect inspectors Iggy the iguana and Sal the salamander.

A 50% deposit is required up front and remainder is due upon delivery of the painting.

Final

Once your painting is completed a confirmation email will be sent for you to see your final painting. At this stage the rest of the payment is due and your painting is shipped with any photos provided.

Reference

Sketch

After recieving your 50% deposit, a collection of photographic references are taken. These photos can be sent via email or can be mailed directly to Christina. The more pictures that are available to reference, the better depiction of your pet. All photos will be returned.
Next, a rough sketch is drawn up and sent to your email. This is a rough black and white version just for you to get a better idea of what you will get. If any corrections are to be made then a second revised sketch will be emailed out for your review and approval.

...about Christina

Christina developed an early interest in painting and animals. Her medium of choice is oil paint on Arches watercolor paper. She graduated with a BFA at the University of Hartford under her mentors Dennis Nolan, Bill Thomson, and Doug Anderson. For a period of time Christina worked in a shop as the head scenic painter. There she painted large scale murals, mini golf course sculpts, and 3D signage for shops and stores. In 2010 she worked with Spider Magazine on a couple of summer issues. She just completed her first illustrated children's book ¡A Bailar! by Judith Ortiz Cofer and now is available for sale at most book stores.

Summary

"A bailar! There's music in the park today--let's dance!" Marita and her mother are finishing their Saturday chores and anticipating Papi's salsa concert in the park that night, so Mami makes the broom her dance partner to show her daughter how to dance to the music. "Listen to the claves, the bongos, and the cowbells. Listen to the maracas, the timbales, and the giro, they will tell you how to move your shoulders, your hips, your feet." They dance faster and faster, so fast that they fall down on the floor laughing.That afternoon, they put on their best dresses and dancing shoes, and old Don Jose says they look like "dos lindas flores." He follows them slowly, "his cane tapping out a salsa beat on the sidewalk." The music floats in and out of the barrio's alleys, calling listeners to move, move, move. Soon Marita and her mother are leading a parade of neighbors and friends dancing and singing their way to the concert. And at the park, Papi plays notes on his trombone that are a secret between him and Marita: te veo, te ve-o, te ve-o. I see you, I see you, I see you!

Book Launch Party!

Children of all ages came to celebrate the book release of ¡A Bailar! They came in to get their books signed and were able to get their faces painted and get a balloon animal. Then made their way to the craft table to make their own maracas they used to learn some new salsa moves on the dance floor!
